- Inbox Notifications and Emails 17.0
Notified by email and in the Inbox - not one or the other
Odoo makes you choose: a user gets chatter notifications either as email or in the Odoo Inbox. This makes "Handle by Emails" mean both, so nothing is missed by the people who live in their mailbox and nothing is lost by the people who live in Odoo.
Inbox Notifications and Emails (technical name to_mail_notif_and_email) is an Odoo 17.0 app for Odoo Community and Odoo Enterprise and Viindoo Cloud, built for anyone who lives in their mailbox, anyone who lives in odoo, administrator.

Key Features
In standard Odoo a user's notification setting is exclusive. Choose Handle by Emails and every mention, assignment and follower message leaves Odoo as mail and never appears in the Inbox; choose Handle in Odoo and it never reaches the mailbox. Both halves of that choice cost something real: the first means a user who is inside Odoo all day has to check email to know they were mentioned, the second means anything urgent waits until they log in. This module removes the choice. When a user is set to Handle by Emails, the notification is still delivered to their mailbox and it also lands in their Odoo Inbox, marked unread, and arrives live on screen while they are working. The count in the top bar moves, the Inbox lists it, and the same message is in their email client. Nothing is configured per user beyond the setting they already have.
The email is still sent
Same server, same templates, same queue - the mail half of the delivery is untouched.
The message itself
The notification email as the recipient receives it.
Straight from the chatter
Any chatter message that notifies someone gets both channels.
Per user, as before
The preference stays per user; nothing global to switch on.
How It Works
Two steps, and the choice disappears.
Leave the preference as it is
Handle by Emails is the setting most users already have. Installing this module changes what it does, not where it lives.
The mention lands in both places
The same notification is now an unread Inbox entry - with the counter in the top bar - and an email in the queue. Reading it in Odoo clears it in Odoo; the email stays in the mailbox like any other.
What You Get
"Handle by Emails" now means email and Inbox, for every chatter notification
The Inbox entry is a real unread notification: it counts in the top bar and clears when read
The message arrives live on screen, not only at the next page load
Applies to mentions, assignments and follower messages - anything that notifies
No new setting: it changes what the existing preference does
Emails still go out through the same mail server and templates as before
More Screens
Everything below was taken on a database seeded with real business data, on this series - not a mock-up and not a screenshot from an older version.
Notifications in the Inbox for an email-preference user
The same notifications in the outgoing queue
The chatter message that produced both
The preference the module reinterprets
What This App Does Not Do
Read this before you buy. Everything below is something the app deliberately leaves to another app or to you.
There is no third option in the interface; "Handle by Emails" simply also delivers to the Inbox.
Followers, mentions and assignments are Odoo's rules; this only changes the channels a notification is delivered through.
No batching, no daily summary, no re-send if a message is left unread.
If Odoo cannot send email, the Inbox half still works - but the email half fails like any other outgoing message.
Works Well With
Apps from the same stack, built to fit this one:
Display Recipients in Email
Shows who else received the message, on the message itself.
viin_mail_show_recipientWho Should Use Inbox Notifications and Emails?
Anyone who lives in their mailbox
Keeps getting the email, and now also finds it in Odoo when they come in.
Anyone who lives in Odoo
Sees the mention immediately instead of discovering it in email later.
Administrator
Stops fielding "I never saw that" - the notification is in both places by default.

What does Inbox Notifications and Emails not do?
It does not add a new preference. There is no third option in the interface; "Handle by Emails" simply also delivers to the Inbox. It does not change who gets notified. Followers, mentions and assignments are Odoo's rules; this only changes the channels a notification is delivered through. It is not a digest or a reminder. No batching, no daily summary, no re-send if a message is left unread. Outgoing mail still needs a mail server. If Odoo cannot send email, the Inbox half still works - but the email half fails like any other outgoing message.
